I'm a first-generation Australian Salvationist, who discovered that the
Salvation Army were a church only a few years ago. I was hooked straightaway,
especially when I read books like Booth's Drum - a history of the Salvation Army
in Australia.
I'm always inspired when I look into the roots of the Salvation Army. Hence,
I have a strong attraction to what I think of as the 'radical' part of the Salvation
Army - the 'Primitive Salvationists'. They're not an official group (as far as I know),
just a number of Salvos scattered around the world who have been inspired by looking at
the roots of the Salvation Army, and do 'crazy' things like living on the dodgy side of
town and mixing with the drug dealers and prostitutes. Why is this attraction important
to me? Because it influences a lot of my worldview, and I'd like to think it influences
my actions too. Yahweh is a God of the broken-hearted - those of us willing to open up
the deep, dark, broken places of our hearts to him, receive healing and a 'peace that
passes all understanding'.
When we receive healing and peace from God, to the depths of our souls - it's then,
I believe, that we start being truly effective workers for Him.
